How to Clean a Cartridge Filter

A Central Florida Homeowner’s Guide to Stronger Filtration and Crystal-Clear Water

Cartridge filters are one of the most efficient and low-maintenance filtration systems for Florida pools. They capture fine debris, improve circulation, and operate at lower pressure than sand or DE filters. But they must be cleaned regularly to maintain peak performance — especially in Central Florida, where pollen, storms, and year-round swimming put extra demand on your filtration system.

At Professional Pool Company, we teach homeowners how to clean their cartridge filters safely and effectively to protect their equipment and maintain clear water all year long.

How Often Should You Clean a Cartridge Filter?

In Central Florida, we recommend:

  • Every 4–6 weeks during swim season
  • Every 6–10 weeks in cooler months
  • Immediately after major storms
  • Whenever pressure rises 8–10 psi above your clean starting pressure

If your pool has heavy debris, oak trees, palm shedding, or frequent use, more frequent cleaning may be needed.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Garden hose with high-pressure spray nozzle
  • Filter-safe cleaner (optional but recommended)
  • Large bucket (for soaking, optional)
  • Silicone lubricant (for o-rings)
  • Soft brush (optional)

Avoid using pressure washers — they damage cartridge fibers.

How to Clean a Cartridge Filter (Step-by-Step)

✔ 1. Turn Off the Pump and System Power

Always shut the system off completely before opening the filter housing.

✔ 2. Release Pressure From the Tank

Use the air relief valve to release pressure.

This is essential for safety — never open a pressurized filter tank.

✔ 3. Remove the Filter Lid

Loosen the clamp band or locking mechanism (depending on the model), then lift the lid carefully.

Check the o-ring for wear or debris.

✔ 4. Remove the Cartridge

Lift the cartridge straight up and out of the tank.

If it feels stuck, wiggle gently — never force it.

✔ 5. Rinse the Cartridge Thoroughly

Use a garden hose to spray between each pleat from top to bottom.

Focus on:

  • Pollen
  • Dirt
  • Oils
  • Leaf particles

Continue until water runs clear.

Soak the cartridge overnight in a filter-cleaner solution to remove:

  • Body oils
  • Sunscreen
  • Fine debris
  • Calcium buildup

Rinse thoroughly afterward.

✔ 7. Inspect the Cartridge for Damage

Look for:

  • Torn pleats
  • Cracked end caps
  • Loose glue joints
  • Flattened pleats

Replace the cartridge if it shows significant wear or if it’s more than 12–18 months old.

✔ 8. Lubricate the Tank O-Ring

Apply a silicone-based lubricant to ensure a proper seal.

Never use petroleum jelly — it breaks down rubber.

✔ 9. Reassemble the Filter Tank

Place the cartridge back inside, secure the lid, and tighten the clamp or locking ring evenly.

✔ 10. Turn the Pump Back On and Bleed Air Out

Open the air relief valve until water flows steadily, then close it.

Check the pressure gauge to ensure your cleaned filter returns to normal operating pressure.

When to Replace a Cartridge Filter

Most cartridges last:

  • 12–18 months for heavy-use pools
  • 18–24 months for screened-in pools
  • Up to 3 years with perfect care and low debris load

Replace sooner if:

  • Pressure rises quickly after cleaning
  • Water stays cloudy
  • Cartridge fibers are worn or frayed

Why Cartridge Filters Are Great for Florida Pools

  • Better fine-particle filtration
  • Ideal for algae-prone environments
  • No backwashing needed (saves water)
  • Quieter, more efficient circulation
  • Perfect for salt systems

Regular cleaning ensures maximum performance.

ProPoolCo Recommendation

To maximize filter life in Central Florida:

  • Rinse every 4–6 weeks
  • Deep-clean quarterly
  • Replace annually if heavily used
  • Keep debris out of the pool
  • Maintain proper water chemistry

A clean filter = a clear pool.
