Pool Construction Timeline

Professional Pool Company — What to Expect at Each Phase

Building a custom gunite pool involves several phases, each with specific inspections, engineering requirements, and quality control checks. While every property is unique, most projects follow a similar structure. This article explains the typical timeline from start to finish so homeowners know exactly what to expect.

1. Design & Planning (1–2 Weeks)

Your project begins with:

  • Custom 3D design
  • Property layout planning
  • Setback and zoning review
  • Feature selection
  • HOA preparation (if required)

Once the design is approved, we prepare your engineered plans for permitting.

2. Engineering & Permitting (2–8 Weeks)

Duration depends on your county, HOA, and design complexity.

This phase includes:

  • Structural engineering
  • Screen enclosure engineering (if applicable)
  • Equipment schematics
  • Grading and drainage review
  • County permit submission
  • County or city review times

Some counties approve in as little as 2–3 weeks; others take longer depending on volume and review requirements.

3. Pre-Construction Layout (1–3 Days)

Once the permit is issued, we:

  • Mark out the pool location
  • Confirm elevation
  • Verify access path
  • Review utilities and easements

A walkthrough may occur at this stage to confirm placement.

4. Excavation (1–3 Days)

Your pool begins taking shape. This includes:

  • Digging to engineered depths
  • Shaping the pool outline
  • Managing soil or groundwater conditions
  • Preparing for steel installation

Tight access or special soil conditions may extend this phase slightly.

5. Steel Reinforcement (1–3 Days)

Our team installs a complete structural steel grid based on engineering.

This includes:

  • Bond beam structure
  • Steel wall and floor grid
  • Tie spacing
  • Equipment bonding connections

A county inspection typically occurs once steel is in place.

6. Plumbing, Electrical & Equipment Setup (2–4 Days)

This phase includes:

  • Main drains
  • Skimmer line installation
  • Return lines
  • Suction lines
  • Spa plumbing (if applicable)
  • Equipment pad setup
  • Gas/electrical coordination
  • Plumbing pressure test

Another inspection is required before gunite.

7. Gunite / Shotcrete Shell (1 Day + Cure Time)

The structural shell is applied in one continuous session and shaped by hand.

After gunite, the shell must cure:

  • Cure time: 21–28 days
  • Light watering is performed regularly
  • No construction on the shell during this period

This ensures long-term strength and durability.

8. Tile, Coping & Decking (1–3 Weeks)

After curing, exterior finishes begin:

  • Waterline tile
  • Coping installation
  • Deck preparation
  • Decking material installation (pavers, concrete, travertine, etc.)
  • Expansion joints and final grading

Larger or more complex decks may increase this phase.

9. Screen Enclosure (If Included) (1–3 Days)

Screen enclosures require:

  • Engineering approval
  • Fabrication
  • Installation
  • Wind-load compliance

This step often occurs after decking is complete.

10. Interior Finish & Pool Start-Up (2–4 Days)

Interior finish is applied (pebble, quartz, or aggregate).

This phase includes:

  • Final interior finish application
  • Filling the pool with water
  • Equipment startup
  • Initial water balance
  • Lighting and automation checks

11. Final Walkthrough & Handover (1 Day)

Your project concludes with a complete orientation:

  • Equipment training
  • Automation setup
  • Safety review
  • Maintenance guidance
  • Warranty overview

You’re now ready to enjoy your new pool.

Typical Total Timeline

While each home is unique, a normal timeline looks like:

  • Design & Engineering: 2–4 weeks
  • Permitting: 2–8 weeks
  • Construction: 8–12 weeks
  • Total Average: 12–20 weeks (varies by county & design complexity)

Factors that may extend the timeline:

  • Rain or weather delays
  • HOA approval times
  • County permit backlog
  • Access challenges
  • Custom features
  • Larger decks
  • Screen enclosures
  • Complex engineering needs

We Focus on Accuracy, Not Rushed Timelines
